Episode 214: Sobriety vs Drinking in Moderation Mindset
Spotify | Apple Podcast | Website
“Alcohol legit rewires the brain. If you’ve developed that habit around drinking, cutting back won’t necessarily stop the cravings.”
Here’s a glance at this episode...
In this episode, Courtney digs into one of the most common questions people face when reevaluating their relationship with alcohol: Do I really need to quit, or can I just cut back? She shares why moderation often feels like an exhausting mental game, why it rarely works for people with problematic drinking patterns, and the key mindset shifts that make sobriety sustainable.
What you will learn in this episode:
- Why moderation feels like freedom at first but often leads back to the same cycle.
- How alcohol rewires the brain, making “just cutting back” unsustainable for many.
- The red flags that moderation isn’t working for you (like broken rules and mental exhaustion).
- How to reframe sobriety as freedom, not punishment
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Do I really need to quit drinking, or can I just cut back?” you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions people wrestle with when they start rethinking their relationship with alcohol.
Many of us try moderation first. Maybe you set rules about only drinking on weekends, or only at special occasions, or promising yourself you’ll only have two glasses of wine. It feels manageable in the moment, until it doesn’t. You wake up frustrated, wondering why you can’t stick to the rules you set, and questioning if you’re failing.
Here’s the truth: moderation can work for some people, but for many, it’s just an exhausting mental game that keeps alcohol in the driver’s seat. Let’s break it down.
The Moderation Game
Moderation often starts with the best of intentions. You cut back, make rules, and feel like you’re in control. Maybe you take a week off to prove you can, then ease back in with new limits.
But if you’ve built a deeper habit with alcohol, moderation quickly turns into mental gymnastics. Should I drink tonight? How many can I have? Will I really stop at two? It becomes a cycle of bargaining, controlling, and then breaking your own rules.
I know this game because I played it for four years. I’d swear off alcohol for a couple of weeks, then convince myself I could handle “just a couple.” Inevitably, I’d find myself right back where I started, frustrated and tired of my own broken promises.
Why Moderation Rarely Works
Here’s the science: alcohol literally rewires the brain. Once your brain associates drinking with relief, relaxation, or reward, simply cutting back doesn’t break that connection. Even if you drink less, the cravings remain.
That’s why moderation feels like a tug of war. You’re constantly deciding, negotiating, and then beating yourself up when you slip. It’s exhausting, and it keeps alcohol at the center of your decisions and emotions.
Even if you’re drinking less, alcohol is still in control. And that is not freedom.
Signs Moderation Isn’t Working
So how do you know if moderation is just prolonging the inevitable? Ask yourself:
- Am I constantly thinking about when I can drink?
- Do I feel relief when I can drink and anxiety when I can’t?
- Have I broken my own moderation rules more times than I can count?
- Is alcohol still costing me in health, happiness, or relationships?
If you answered yes to any of these, moderation may not be your solution. It might be keeping you stuck in the same cycle, when what you really need is freedom from alcohol altogether.
The Case for Sobriety
Sobriety isn’t about punishment, it’s about release. It’s the freedom of no longer negotiating with yourself, no longer waking up full of regret, no longer spending your mental energy on the next drink.
Instead of thinking, “I can’t drink,” shift to, “I don’t have to drink.” That reframe changes everything. You’re not losing something, you’re gaining peace, energy, and self-trust.
And the benefits speak for themselves: better sleep, more clarity, real connections, more energy, and an incredible boost in self-esteem. You learn to trust yourself again. You stop breaking boundaries with yourself and start honoring them. That is powerful.
How to Let Go of the Moderation Mindset
If you’re realizing moderation isn’t working for you, the next step is learning how to embrace an alcohol-free life. Here’s where to start:
- Reframe sobriety as a choice. Stop telling yourself it’s a punishment. This is happening for you, not to you.
- Start small. Don’t torture yourself with “forever.” Focus on today. Then tomorrow. Then the next. One decision at a time is how sobriety sticks.
- Develop healthy coping mechanisms. Crying, walking, working out, listening to music, journaling — all are better outlets than alcohol.
- Track the benefits. Celebrate the positives, even small ones. Waking up without a hangover is a victory. Feeling less anxious is a win.
- Check your ego. Even years into sobriety, it’s easy to get complacent. Keep remembering where drinking took you and why you left it behind.
Final Thoughts
Moderation might work for some people, but if you’re listening to this and nodding along, chances are you already know it isn’t working for you. You’re not failing. You’re not broken. You’re just stuck in a game that’s rigged against you.
Sobriety is not punishment. It’s freedom. It’s peace. It’s the chance to see what life can look like without alcohol controlling every thought, decision, and emotion.
You’ve already given alcohol years of your life. Why not give yourself the chance to see what life can look like without it?
Keep on trucking and kicking ass out there.
