“When you take alcohol away, it feels like you’ve lost your only coping tool.
But what you’re really doing is making space for better ones.”

Here’s a glance at this episode:

Have you ever tried to quit drinking and thought, “Why is this so hard? Shouldn’t it be easier?” You’re not alone. Quitting alcohol often feels harder than it should not because you’re weak, but because alcohol changes your brain chemistry, your coping patterns, and the way you deal with stress.

In episode 244 of the Sober Vibes Podcast, I’m breaking down the real reasons quitting feels so challenging and what actually makes it easier. Whether you’re sober curious, in your first 30 days without alcohol, or stuck in the stop-start cycle, this conversation will help you see that you don’t need more willpower, you need better tools and support.

What You'll Learn in this Episode:

  • How alcohol impacts your brain and fuels alcohol-induced anxiety
  • Why drinking to cope with alcohol and stress makes quitting feel impossible
  • How relying on alcohol speeds up alcohol and aging in your body and skin
  •  Why trying to stop drinking with willpower alone often fails
  •  The freedom that comes when you stop drinking every night and start building new habits
  •  How a sober coach can help you break the cycle and finally follow through

If you’ve been telling yourself you should be able to do this alone, this episode is your reminder: you’re not broken, you just need the right support.

The Myth of “It Should Be Easy”

If quitting alcohol feels harder than it should, you’re not broken. I used to think the same thing. For years I lived in the moderation cycle, telling myself “just on weekends,” “no shots,” “only two glasses,” until I was right back where I started. Every rule I made became another one I broke.

It wasn’t until I understood why quitting felt so impossible that things finally changed. This isn’t about willpower. It’s about brain chemistry, habits, and trying to do the hardest thing in the world all by yourself.

Alcohol Literally Changes Your Brain

Let’s talk science for a minute. Alcohol rewires your brain. It messes with your dopamine, GABA, and serotonin—the very chemicals that regulate mood, stress, and pleasure. When you stop drinking, your brain doesn’t know what to do with itself. You feel restless, anxious, and irritated. That’s not weakness. That’s chemistry.

For years I chased that dopamine hit. And if you’ve ever noticed yourself swapping one habit for another (sugar, scrolling, shopping) you’re not crazy. Your brain is healing. It’s looking for that same “feel-good” surge it used to get from alcohol. The good news is that over time, with consistency and support, your brain rewires itself in a healthier way. The fog lifts. The joy comes back. You start to feel like yourself again.

When Alcohol Becomes Your Coping Tool

None of us pick up our first drink thinking, “I’m going to use this to survive adulthood.” We drink because it’s fun, social, and everyone else does it. But somewhere along the way, alcohol quietly takes over your coping system. It becomes the answer for stress, celebration, grief, boredom—everything.

When I quit smoking years ago, I was shocked by how much time I got back. I hadn’t realized how often I rewarded myself with a cigarette until I stopped. Quitting alcohol is the same. You suddenly see how many moments revolved around that drink. You’re not just quitting drinking, you’re learning how to live differently.

And yes, it’s uncomfortable at first. But every day you show up without alcohol, you’re building new tools that actually work—tools that don’t leave you with guilt, shame, or hangovers. Things like walks, journaling, deep breathing, a morning coffee ritual, or calling a friend instead of pouring a glass.

The Isolation Trap: Why Doing It Alone Backfires

Here’s the truth—most people try to quit in secret. They don’t want to talk about it because of shame, fear of judgment, or the “what will people think” voice in their head. I did the same thing. I white-knuckled it for almost two years.

But willpower runs out. Accountability doesn’t.

When you’re surrounded by people who get it, who’ve walked through the same cravings, anxiety, and guilt, everything shifts. You stop fighting it alone in your head and start building real momentum. That’s exactly why I created the Sobriety Circle—so you don’t have to do this solo. You get community, encouragement, and real strategies that fit your life, not your neighbor’s.

Reframing the “Hard”

Let’s flip the script. You’re not being punished by sobriety. You’re detoxing from something chemically addictive.

At first it feels like you’re losing something, but you’re actually gaining everything—clarity, calm, control, energy, peace, and confidence. That’s what I want you to focus on. The shift happens when you stop saying “why me” and start asking “what’s waiting for me?”

Because what’s waiting on the other side is freedom. Freedom from the 3 a.m. wake-ups, the mental gymnastics, the guilt. Freedom from living every day on repeat.

Making It Easier: What Actually Works

You don’t need to be stronger. You need a strategy.

Start by understanding the science so you stop blaming yourself. Then start building real coping tools that regulate your nervous system instead of numbing it. My favorites: morning walks, warm tea at night, music therapy, therapy-therapy, and journaling through the urge.

And find support—coaching, community, therapy, whatever fits your world. Quitting alcohol isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection.

Keep an eye on the 30/60/90-day marks. Around 30 days your energy begins to climb. By 60 days your sleep deepens. By 90 days you start realizing this new calm is what you were always chasing in that glass.

Consistency and compassion build confidence. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way to peace.

The “Why” Behind Your Drinking

Every woman I’ve coached has a reason her relationship with alcohol turned dark. Sometimes it’s stress, trauma, loneliness, or resentment. Sometimes it’s the identity crisis of motherhood or empty nesting.

Ask yourself honestly—what was alcohol covering up for you? Because once you know that, you can finally start to heal it instead of pouring over it.

You can’t change what you don’t understand. Finding your why gives you power, direction, and permission to build a new story.

Freedom, Not Punishment

If quitting alcohol feels harder than it should, it’s because alcohol changed your brain, not because you’re weak. Every day you choose clarity over chaos, you’re rewiring your life.

You’re not falling behind. You’re rebuilding.

And one day you’ll look back and realize you’ve created a life you don’t want to escape from anymore.

If you’re ready to stop white-knuckling it and finally get the tools and support you need, apply for one-on-one coaching with me or join the Sobriety Circle. You don’t have to do this alone.

Keep on trucking, and stay healthy out there.
